A Courtyard with Lotus
Location: Yuanxiang Lake, Jiading District, Shanghai
Floor area: 450 sqm
The new city is under development, the park is under construction, and everything seems to be rising rapidly on a clean flat. Theoretically, the park will be based on the city and respond to the leisure needs of the public. The city will also feature the park, and the natural space provided by the park will create a green core for the high-density city.
However, all this starts almost from scratch, and the same applies to the small management house on the edge of the park. Since the real purpose of it has not been determined, its name in the outbuilding in the park can only get a No.D, so the design of Building-No.D will also face a lot of difficult problems.
The park is expected to set three functions for Building-No.D: park management rooms, public toilets and garbage stations, and a small tea room for visitors to rest.
Setting up a sketch building in the environment should have added nodes and colors to the environment, but the characters of Building-No.D are hard to do the same. Similarly, the sketch building will also be based on the green landscape of the park, but such a scenario will have to wait a few years. Therefore, the expected starting point for designing Building-No.D is in a nursery that will mature with the production of it.
The center of the nursery opens up a small space as an environment that can be quickly created and also for a relatively limited perimeter. Only in such a reduced view can we specifically discuss how to build it.
The three functional space of the building are respectively specified in the scale of 50, 250, 130 square meters, but if only the three volumes are used for layout, then such a small site is still monotonous and too large. Then each functional space is further refined into more building blocks, which are scattered in the empty field of the nursery and form a relatively abundant spatial composition relationship by using the volume relationship between them. However, the functional process will still be organized strictly.
Since the surrounding urban environment will provide a high-rise background, and the surrounding trees are unlikely to take shape in a short period, the idea of the original boundary by the nursery has been replaced by a circle of solid walls in the design process.
But the void in the wall will communicate the visual communication between the interior and exterior of the courtyard, and provide a relatively comfortable and pleasant environment for visitors in the tea room. The gap between the courtyard wall and the building is filled with water, and the lotus pond, which can also be formed rapidly, will also provide a focused view object. Correspondingly, the viewing window of the building was also lowered to a strip that was only 1.4 meters above the ground, and together with the folds formed by the displacement of the building volume, formed a dynamic lotus picture. It is expected that in a wider landscape, the park will be provided with a small environment with distance in time and space.
