美术馆以篆刻艺术家韩天衡的名字命名, 坐落于上海嘉定老城区的南入口, 由一间有着70余年历史的纺织厂改造而成。建筑始建于上世纪40年代,老厂房为锯齿形建筑形式,为三跨简易木结构。70年代扩建了11跨的预制混凝土结构;上世纪/\九十年代,纺织厂又在南侧加建了一幢两层高的精梳车间,并在北侧增建了三层楼高的青花厂房。2011年在原有建筑格局的基础上,纺织厂变身美术馆的方案启动。

美术馆除了老厂房之外的现代建筑都用黑色表达,结构基本由混凝土或者钢结构组成,以区别于保留下来的据齿形厂房区域。新增的钢结构使用氟碳喷涂黑色钢板和穿孔板,而改造后的混凝土结构则采用与之相应的纯黑涂料,并配以穿孔板门窗。

老厂房的锯齿形建筑结构是纺织厂的标志性特征,也是历史发展过程的见证,在改造后成为了可供公众观赏的开放空间。设计方案在老厂房连片结构中嵌入了开敞环境和天井院落,植入错落的绿树竹枝,为美术馆增添了些许园林韵味。

美术馆入口选择在青花厂房与老厂房的接合部位,提供一个具有兼容性的入口。它正好将原先保留下来的红砖烟囱包裹其内,通过一个15米通高的空间转折后在东侧形成了一个巨型门廊,与其他支撑性的钢柱形成了一个具有舞台效果的背景。

Han Tianheng Art Museum is a project renovated from the Feilian Textile Mill, which is a preserved industry heritage in Jiading, a satellite town on the northwest of Shanghai. The textile mill enjoys a history of more than 70 years, it has been developed since the 1940s from a two-row small workshop to a big enterprise occupying a site of 2 hectares.  

The general layout of this textile mill can be distinguished as two parts: a pre-1980s traditional sawtooth roofed factory house, and the surrounding masonry buildings as extensions. The proposal of the design is to seek strengthening and giving a clear differential value to the perimeter external facilities, in order to make possible of freeing of central space, giving maximum flexibility to future adaptations of the functional program.

The most interesting part of the building is the one-story saw tooth roofed factory, which has been successfully reinforced, and equipped with insulating glass and AV system inside. Several gardens were inserted within the galleries for public exhibitions. The red tile roof could be enjoyed as the fifth elevation by visitors from the surrounding higher buildings. The northern part of the complex is a three-story high factory house. It was transformed to the permanent galleries for hosting and displaying the collections of Mr. Han Tianheng, one of the most important Chinese traditional calligrapher, painter, connoisseur and collector in Shanghai.

In order to integrate all these parts together, a new structure was designed and placed in between the original two parts as for the lobby. 

Working with the devious historic elements, the project of Han Tianheng Art Museum has an object of coordinating and integrating the new components clearly to the original structure, the purpose of which  is to generate not only continuous and coherent spaces but also calm and carefully provide ambiance for the exhibited art pieces.
