Share-Living SPACE

Location: West Guizhou Lilong, Huangpu District, Shanghai
Design: 2017.03-2017.08
Completion: 2017.10
Floor area:1800 sqm

The concept of the project is Shared-Living Space, which aims to explore the possibilities of micro-scale regeneration in the limited space. By creating a more positive public space with interventions on public facilities, the micro regeneration aims to improve the overall quality of living, enhance a sense of belonging, and ultimately bring individual efforts together to create a vibrant neighborhood.

The project site is an 1800 square meter public space among West Guizhou Lilong. Throughout history, it has maintained a layout comprising 3 main lanes and more than 10 sub-lanes. These spaces are crucial for residents' public and social lives. However, due to improper arrangements of these facilities as well as the growing population and rental housing, the general conditions of these public space have been deteriorated and become negative spaces in the community.

As the domestic space of a household it is difficult to work on in the current situation, the strategy of the project is focusing on the public areas located on the main lanes with micro-scale regeneration to create more collective, shareable living spaces, with the intention to provide spaces which would encourage more social interactions, providing more choices for residents living in the narrow indoor environments; meanwhile, creating more communicating and interacting chances, and leading residents‘ participation, to create more advantageous working environments for regeneration at the next step in sub-lanes and the interior of the buildings.

The working method of the project is to use the existing recourses on this site as much as possible with the smallest intervening, focusing on the unused and inactive facilities to insert micro-interventions, and transforming lanes and gateways into shared living space and the place converging community lives.

There are seven gateways, most of which were occupied by garbage rooms, restrooms, and lodges, making negative effects on the environment of entrances. The project focuses on lane spaces and seven gateways to conduct micro-scale regeneration. Preserving original facility functions, the project deals with surface material, relocates building openings and reframes the top of gateways to conceal cluttered cables, eliminate undesirable influences and strengthen a feeling of the hallway of the community entrances. It will not only providie residents with activity places like living rooms, and present various activities and hospitable atmosphere in the extremely limited spaces, but also use active community lives as the entrance guard system for the community to enhance the cohesion of the community.
